Google Offers "No Ads" Site Search to Small Business

Google
2007.07.17For the basic $100 a year fee, Google's Custom Search Business Edition will sift through up to 5,000 web pages. Larger websites can pay $500 per annum to search as many as 50,000 web pages.
"If you have a web site, we already crawl your web site," said Google Enterprise product manager Nitin Mangtani.
"Now we are saying you don't have to manage search within your site." According to Mr Mangtani, companies should be able to customise the new Google search engine within about 10 minutes.

Google buys FeedBurner for a $100 Million

Google
2007.06.03Feedburner is in the closing stages of being acquired by Google for around $100 million. The deal is all cash and mostly upfront, according to our source, although the founders will be locked in for a couple of years.
The information we have is that the deal is now under a binding term sheet and will close in 2-3 weeks, and there is nothing that can really derail it at this point.

Google, Yahoo, Facebook Extensions: Firefox Users At Risk

Mcafee 2007.05.27Third party extensions including the widely used toolbars from Google, Yahoo, Ask, Facebook, LinkedIn, as well as social bookmark extension from Del.icio.us and two anti-hacking add-ons, the Netcraft Anti-Phishing Toolbar and the PhishTank SiteChecker all put users at risk of having their browser infected with malicious code.
and later...
Unlike the research suggests, McAfee SiteAdvisor is actually worse than any of these other major extensions. It periodically downloads completely unauthenticated code from McAfee's server, which it then executes with the same privileges as your browser.
Not only does this backdoor allow McAfee to do whatever they please with your computer, but a hacker can run any malicious code on your system without you ever noticing by simply spoofing the URL http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/safe/safe.js

Facebook Opens Up Its Platform

Facebook 2007.05.27Outsiders can now develop Internet services on Facebook's infrastructure, he explains, that will have full access to all its members.
The company will impose no limitations on what kinds of applications others can create, except that they be legal. Says Zuckerberg: "They can sell sponsorships, they can have ads, they can sell things, they can link off to another site - we are just agnostic."

Google Voice Local Search

Google
2007.04.11I couldn't resist testing Google's new Google Voice Local Search (GVLS), although it doesn't involve either booting up my PC or connecting to the Internet. As a result, it feels a bit strange, since Google is a name one normally associates with bits and bytes.
GVLS is a new free phone information service, currently only for business listings, that offers an alternative to the phone companies' not-free 411 services. You call 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411) and according to Google, if the business is part of the Google Maps database, you should be able to get connected.
It's an interesting experience. When you call, you get a cheery male voice that announces "GOOG-411 Experimental," and asks you for your city and state. Once, that's been established, you're invited to tell it either a business name or category. If there's only a single listing available, it offers to connect you; if more than one, you get a numbered list to choose from.

Yahoo & Viacom in Ad Deal

Yahoo
2007.04.10Media conglomerate Viacom said Tuesday that it chose Yahoo to provide search advertising for 33 of its Internet sites in a high-profile boost to Yahoo's new Web ad system.
The system, dubbed Project Panama, launched in early February and is seen as a key test of Yahoo's ability to offer advertisers a competing technology to that of Web search leader Google.
Viacom said the multiyear, exclusive advertising partnership with Yahoo covers broadband sites for its MTV, VH1, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon television networks and could expand to more than 140 additional sites worldwide.
