Google rolls out video service to new countries

search giant Google is rolling out eight country-specific versions of
its video-sharing community website, Google Video, to widen its appeal
and compete with runaway market leaders YouTube and myspace. Google Video, which has so far existed solely as a US-based site, will today roll out targeted services for the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Canada. |
Microsoft Patches 18 Security Flaws in Windows and Office
| 2006.07.12Microsoft Corp. today released seven security updates to address 18 separate flaws in its Windows operating systems and Office software, including 13 problems that earned a "critical" severity rating, the company's most dire. Three of the patches mend flaws in Microsoft Office, including eight specific to Microsoft Excel. As Security Fix noted in recent posts, software blueprints showing would-be attackers just how to exploit two of these Excel flaws are already available online. |
Google is Building a Research Center in Ann Arbor Mich
| 2006.07.11will have up to 1,000 employees, people who had been briefed on the plan said Monday night. The announcement is set to be made Tuesday morning by Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm at a news conference at the state Capitol in Lansing. Google is expected to open the center in downtown Ann Arbor, the hometown of the University of Michigan, where Larry Page, one of Google's founders, earned his undergraduate degree in engineering. |
IBM unveils Lotus Notes for Linux users
2006.07.10IBM Corp. will today unveil the first version of its popular Lotus Notes software designed to run on the Linux operating system. It's the latest move in IBM's campaign to give computer users an alternative to software products from industry leader Microsoft Corp.The new Lotus Notes 7 for Linux software will go on sale in about two weeks, at about $130.

AOL Wants to Be Free

Microsoft faces second WGA lawsuit
2006.07.07 Microsoft has been named in a second lawsuit over its antipiracy Windows Genuine Advantage program, which plaintiffs allege acts as "spyware" on their systems.Engineered Process Controls, Univex and several other parties filed a class action lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court in Seattle, alleging Microsoft installed "spyware" on their computers as a "critical security update." The suit comes days after another complaint containing similar allegations was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

Cuebot-K IM (a worm) poses as WGA
2006.07.04Security experts have warned of a worm that poses as the Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) anti-piracy tool.WGA has only just been branded Spyware, in that it collects unnecessary hardware and software data from users' PCs.
The Cuebot-K worm spreads via AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), registering itself as a new system driver service called 'wgavn'. It carries the display name 'Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Notification', and runs automatically during system startup.
